VCU Libraries introduces new Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery platform

VCU Libraries has migrated to a new resource sharing system for Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery services on July 1. The backbone of the new system is called Rapido and is deeply integrated into existing VCU Libraries systems. 

The VCU community is able to more seamlessly request items and digital copies from other libraries and from the VCU Libraries collections. Separate accounts are longer be needed, and requests take fewer clicks. The network of available resources from other libraries includes more than 1,600 library partners and is more easily discoverable through new search options in VCU Libraries Search. The integration also enables VCU Libraries staff to process requests more quickly and efficiently.

Resource sharing is a popular service at VCU that supports the scholarship, research and creativity of the community through access to libraries worldwide. Last year, VCU Libraries provided 6,526 books and 3,929 scans of journal articles and book chapters to VCU users through interlibrary loan and document delivery services.

Loftan Hooker, Head of Access Services, who is chairing the migration effort says, “Rapido introduces a transformative way for VCU patrons to request and access library materials, streamlining the entire process from start to finish. With intuitive, seamless search capabilities and real-time updates on request statuses, users can now enjoy a faster, more transparent, and user-friendly experience. This new platform not only simplifies access to resources but also reflects our ongoing commitment to improving library services through innovative technology. We’re excited about the possibilities Rapido brings and look forward to seeing the long-term, positive impact it will have on the research, learning and discovery experiences of our patrons.” 

Enterprise Systems Librarian Tim Siegel is the technical lead on the project and reflects that “Rapido provides a platform for building more efficient workflows for placing and processing requests, and builds on best practices and lessons learned from other systems, so that requesters get the content they want faster with fewer roadblocks.”
